The Utah Avalanche Center

Your Local Avalanche Center

The UAC provides avalanche forecasting across Utah covering eight geographic areas: Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake, the Uintas, Provo, Skyline, Moab, and the Abajos. They have eight full-time and two part-time avalanche forecasters. Avalanche forecasts are published daily and contain life-saving information about current avalanche and mountain weather conditions. Regional forecasters create avalanche forecasts by gathering data from a multitude of sources - fieldwork, public observations, professional observations, the weather forecast, recent avalanche activity, and snowpack information.

Northwest Avalanche Center

The Northwest Avalanche Center exists to increase avalanche awareness, reduce avalanche impacts, and equip the community with mountain weather and avalanche forecasts, education, and data.

The Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) Forecasting Program is administered by the U.S. Forest Service– and is staffed by a team of avalanche meteorologists and field-based forecasters across Washington and Oregon. NWAC issues daily weather and avalanche forecasts once sufficient snow accumulates—typically around Thanksgiving—and operates seven days a week through mid to late April. Forecasts are developed using weather models, remote stations, snowpack data, and field observations from staff, partners, and the public. NWAC works closely with professional avalanche organizations and agencies throughout the region and maintains a smaller off-season team focused on hiring, planning, equipment, and infrastructure. Founded in 1975, NWAC has evolved from a small meteorology-focused program into a robust, region-wide operation, significantly expanding its forecasting staff, education efforts, technology, and community engagement over the past decade through collaboration between its USFS and nonprofit arms.
